The current oratory/church which stands on the island dates back to 1903.

Gougane Barra St Finbarr's Oratory

Upon entering Gougane Barra, you are greeted by the majestic beauty of towering hills overlooking the tranquil Gougane Barra Lake.

A prominent feature is the renowned St. Finbarr's Oratory, nestled on a small island in the lake.

This isolated church stands alone, surrounded by the natural splendor of its surroundings.

Just behind the Oratory lie the remnants of St. Finbarr's 6th-century monastery, adorned with ancient stations of the cross above the weathered prayer cells.

St. Finbarr once sought solace in this very place before his journey to Cork.

The Oratory, adorned with lovely stained glass windows, attracts pilgrims who continue to visit this sacred site.

Every 25th of September, the feast of St. Finbarr is celebrated with a mass held on the Sunday nearest to this date.

The breathtaking scenery of this region provides visitors with a peaceful retreat in the heart of a serene valley.

Notably, Cork's River Lee originates from Gougane Barra's Lake, meandering through Ballingeary and onward to Cork City.
